When a student’s high-risk behavior jeopardizes their education, Step Up intervenes with solutions. The program trains students as peer mediators to resolve conflicts among their peers. Additionally, the program manager offers case management for repeat offenders and mandates community service projects.
*Eligibility: Students at Perth Amboy Academy for Urban Leadership Charter High School, ages 12 to 19
Our Mission
STEP-UP is a holistic, student-centered health and wellness program providing direct services to students and their families at the Academy for Urban Leadership Charter School in Perth Amboy, NJ. The program aims to assist students in navigating their adolescent years, completing their education, and acquiring skills that pave the way for employment and/or higher education.
STEP-UP provides the following services:
Community Service
Community service is a vital aspect of Step-Up, enabling students to emerge as leaders in their community by acquiring the skills of giving back. Past community service activities have encompassed clean-ups in community gardens, composing letters to inspire public servants, providing meals for the less fortunate, organizing and setting up events for community families, and participating in city cleaning initiatives.
After School Programs
STEP-UP also provides the students with a variety of after school programs to engage the youth. Some programs include:
Transitional Support Program (TSP): This group is dedicated to students who initially arrive in the United States and may feel disoriented, facing challenges in assimilation and acculturation.
Teen Talk: This group offers a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for all participants to express their voices on topics that impact their daily lives.
College Readiness
STEP UP provides a number of college preparation services such as:
- College application support
- Filling FAFSA and HESAA applications
- College tours and events
Recreational Activities
A variety of recreational opportunities are offered to the AUL students that promote socialization, develop leadership skills, empowerment, and healthy lifestyle and positive self-esteem.
Enrichment/Recreation
Culturally diverse field trips expand participants’ experience and social awareness.
