When a student’s high-risk behavior jeopardizes their education, Step Up intervenes with solutions. The program trains students as peer mediators to resolve conflicts among their peers. Additionally, the program manager offers case management for repeat offenders and mandates community service projects.

Our Mission

STEP-UP is a holistic, student-centered health and wellness program providing direct services to students and their families at the Academy for Urban Leadership Charter School in Perth Amboy, NJ. The program aims to assist students in navigating their adolescent years, completing their education, and acquiring skills that pave the way for employment and/or higher education.

STEP-UP provides the following services:

Community Service

Community service is a vital aspect of Step-Up, enabling students to emerge as leaders in their community by acquiring the skills of giving back. Past community service activities have encompassed clean-ups in community gardens, composing letters to inspire public servants, providing meals for the less fortunate, organizing and setting up events for community families, and participating in city cleaning initiatives.

After School Programs

STEP-UP also provides the students with a variety of after school programs to engage the youth. Some programs include:

Teen Talk: This group offers a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for all participants to express their voices on topics that impact their daily lives.

College Readiness

STEP UP provides a number of college preparation services such as:

  • College application support
  • Filling FAFSA and HESAA applications
  • College tours and events
Recreational Activities

A variety of recreational opportunities are offered to the AUL students that promote socialization, develop leadership skills, empowerment, and healthy lifestyle and positive self-esteem.
